SARA GÓMEZ

Sara Gomez was a filmmaker from Havana, Cuba. Gomez’s family were middle class professionals like musicians and teachers. Gomez initally studied journalism and music before focusing on film. She was the only Black woman member of the ICAIC (Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematography) during her lifetime. She produced 20 short films in 10 years. Her first and only feature film, One Way or Another was finished by other members of the ICAIC after her fatal asthma attack. Her legacy lives on through this feature film because of its blend of fiction and documentary. The themes of her work often tackled race, gender, and identity during the Cuban revolution.
